LSSU Regional Centers and Locations Mission Statement

LSSU’s regional centers and locations are committed to providing Northern Michigan-area residents educational opportunities for intellectual, personal, and professional growth.

Delivering Academic Excellence Close to You!

LSSU offers a student-oriented approach to higher education. Our small class size, experienced faculty, and nearby sites are what the LSSU regional centers and locations are all about. We are here for you.

We are proud of the high-quality instruction and personal attention we provide; they’re hallmarks of the Lake Superior State University experience.

For assistance in planning your educational goals, stop by our offices in Escanaba, Hessel, Iron Mountain, Petoskey, or St. Helen; schedule an appointment with one of our coordinators; or request information online. We can help answer questions about admissions requirements, scholarships/financial aid, counseling, course selection,  and registration for classes.

About LSSU

  • A degree right here

You can complete your degree or certificate without traveling to LSSU’s campus in Sault Ste. Marie, MI. Courses are offered at our regional centers in Escanaba, Iron Mountain, Petoskey, and Hessel and at our location in St. Helen. Confer with your coordinator to determine if there are any Soo-campus class requirements for your program.

  • When to start

You can begin a bachelor’s degree if you have earned 88 credits or an associate degree. We recommend that you first complete an associate degree and obtain the MTA stamp (indicating your general education courses have been satisfied at the degree-granting institution). Most certificate programs do not require transfer of credits from previous institutions.

  • Completing your degree or certificate

If you have an associate degree, you can typically earn a bachelor’s degree in two or three years by taking two classes per semester (including summers).

The Culinary Arts Chef Certificate from the Hessel – Les Cheneaux Regional Center is a one-year, three-term program.

  • Classes that fit your schedule

Classes for bachelor’s degree programs are offered on weeknights or weekends. We also have online, blended (a portion meets in-seat as well as an online), interactive TV, and tape-delayed DVD classes. A typical night class meets 6-9 PM for 15 weeks. Weekend classes usually meet five weekends (Fri. & Sat.) throughout the semester.

The Culinary Arts Program classes are conducted Mondays-Thursdays 8 AM-4 PM at the Hessel – Les Cheneaux Culinary School and Restaurant site, with students receiving hands-on instruction and practice in the 5,000 square-foot state-of-the-art facility.

  • Faculty

Faculty members for degree programs have a master’s degree or Ph.D. in their field. Their classroom and career experience enhances program instruction. Both full-time LSSU faculty and adjunct professors provide high-quality education to our students.

Faculty for the Hessel – Les Cheneaux Regional Center Culinary Arts Program are Executive Chef and Program Director Zach Schroeder and Graduate Instructor Chef Spencer Hoffman.

  • Personal Attention

Our staff at the LSSU Regional Centers and Locations are available to assist with educational planning, scheduling, obtaining resources, and other topics. We make it as easy as possible for you to earn your degree or certificate!
