What Do You Get With LSSU Engineering?
- Affordability: We have that “private university” atmosphere at a public university price. Approximately 75% of our full-time students receive financial aid.
- Individualized Attention: At LSSU, you’re not a number. Get to know your professors in your engineering courses, where the average class size is 14.
- Robotics: Students in all engineering programs can add a robotics specialization. Students at the Undergraduate level can utilize over $1,000,000 dollars worth of automated equipment.
- Knowledge and Experience: We have lab activities in over 75% of our engineering courses. And you can choose from three options for your senior project experience: co-op, industrial, or applied research.
- A Job: Our graduates have a nearly 100% placement rate and high, competitive starting salaries, typically over $50,000.
A small solar system and wind turbine installed on the roof of the CASET building are highly visible to students and the community. They serve as educational instruments in the School’s degree programs. It is one of several steps being taken to become more involved in renewable energy education, including the development of a new option for our engineering students.
LSSU currently has several student engineering and technology-related student organizations, often which are student chapters of professional engineering organizations:

Living Learning Community
The “Engineering House” Living Learning Community provides additional opportunities for student mentoring, access to technology, and novel field engineering-related field trips through affiliation with the Engineering Society of Detroit (ESD). Senior Projects…more than just theory
All engineering students are required to participate in a senior project sequence. Whether you choose to participate in a team on an industrial or research project, or as an individual at a cooperative work site, you will grow both professionally and personally as you work with professionals in the field.
During a typical senior project, you’ll develop your technical and communication skills, manage budgets, and work with practicing engineers. The senior project experience is designed to give you the tools you need to be prepared for “real life” and allow you to be successful in your career. Choose from one three senior year experiences: Industrial, Research or Cooperative Education.
- INDUSTRIAL These projects can be external or internal in nature. Student teams have a faculty advisor and an industrial customer representative.They are faced with a host of engineering problem-solving, analysis, development, modeling, design review, programming, and fabrication issues. Additionally, participants deal with aspects of being a team of diverse individuals from varying areas of engineering including communication, purchasing and budgets, documentation, time management, and interpersonal skills. Upon completion of the year, the teams present their work to their industrial customers for final approval.
- RESEARCH: The research sequence is frequently chosen by those students who wish to pursue post-graduate degrees. Teams work sided-by-side with a professor on a guided research project. Some projects may come from an industrial background such as robotic simulation software packages that have been reviewed for companies such as DELMIA.
Participants prepare research proposals and grants, as well as publishing the team’s findings in a format suited for professional conferences and presentations. Some industrial projects have a research component to determine feasibility. Once a study has been completed, the following year another team will take on the project and develop a functional prototype for the customer. These multi-year projects change course and take on new dimensions with each successive year.
- COOPERATIVE: Participants in this style of senior experience are those who have previously spent at least a semester in a cooperative education environment. Typically, students work on-site during the spring or summer with a selected company on a personally-proposed and developed project. The following fall, co-op students join a first-semester industrial senior project team to gain team-related skills and experience.
Success… going to grad school or jumping into a career
We have had a 100% success rate of students entering the workforce or being accepted to graduate school . Various companies visit our campus specifically looking for LSSU graduates. You’ll find out alumni at companies including Kawasaki, ABB, Boeing, JR Automation, Essar Algoma Steel, Continental Automotive, Ford, Chrysler, Tenaris Tubes, Pacific Union, John Deere, and Applied Manufacturing Technologies.
LSSU graduates have received their post-graduate degrees from universities such as Purdue, Notre Dame, University of Hawaii at Manoa, Michigan Technological University, Old Dominion, University of Texas at Arlington, and Florida Atlantic Universtiy.

To sponsor a project, complete the 2022-23 Project Application Form and then email it to Dr. Joe Moening. There is also a Project Intent Form if you are unsure if you project is a good fit. You can submit the form and we can discuss it in more detail and provide feedback.
